“Me va samen” [We were together] by Randi Tytingvåg Trio

The lights are dimmed in the hall. Quiet descends. We enter the stage and the audience breaks out in applause. What a wonderful sound! Finally a full house again. And on home turf. We notice it at once as we start the first song. The room is filled with an intense presence. People are sitting close together. There is laughter, and tears, reflection and singalong. No surgical masks or sceptical glances. Only a few months ago this would have been unimaginable. But now we are here – TOGETHER! It’s like someone has turned us on again.

This is how Randi Tytingvåg describes what it was like to play her first concert again after a long period with coronavirus restrictions. It was the autumn of 2022.

“Me va samen” is about the powerful encounter between the audience and the stage on this evening. Passion and vulnerability were completely exposed. There was a heartfelt joy over being able to meet, but with a collective trauma serving as the gloomy backdrop. Life lost so much of its colour during those special times of restrictions. Uncertainty drained your energy. But on this night, perhaps this might have been one of the things that brought people so close together. Greater humility. And gratitude. At one and the same time vulnerable and strong.

And perhaps this song is mostly about something important we have learned to hold on to dearly regardless pandemics and crises, realising the importance of these values in a new way after the experiences from 2020 through to 2022.
