Kari Bremnes - Kari Bremnes // Løsrivelse (Breakaway)
The iconic album “Løsrivelse” [Breakaway] featuring the voice of Kari Bremnes, Ketil Bjørnstad’s music and Edvard Munch’s texts is now being released on a double vinyl LP 30 years after its initial release on CD thirty years ago.
This release from 1993 is special in many ways. One is the combination of Munch, Bjørnstad and Bremnes. Another is the fabulous band, with unique musicians brought together for just this record, a combination that can never be repeated. We hear Paolo Vinaccia on percussion and Audun Kleive on drums, as well as Marius Müller on guitar, Bjørn Kjellemyr on bass and Ketil Bjørnstad on keyboards. The audio genius Jan Erik Kongshaug recorded and mixed the music in collaboration with the producer Erik Hillestad.
Of the eight musicians who congregated in Rainbow studio in the late autumn of 1992 to make this legendary record three have since passed away.
Most people were unaware that Edvard Munch was in the habit of writing a poem or an aphorism as the point of departure for the pictures he created. Ketil Bjørnstad has composed music for these small texts, including poems for “Skrik” (The Scream) and “Madonna” and a number of other familiar Munch works. The album has a double LP format, beautifully packaged, where these pictures are also rendered on the inner sleeves and the cover.
The title “Løsrivelse” [Breakaway] was chosen because some researchers have suggested that Munch’s art in many ways may be understood as his breaking away from his strict pietist family, or “monastic” life, the adjective he used to describe his childhood home. This release is one of the greatest KKV successes throughout the label’s almost fifty years of history.
