Sondre’s monument

Through a career spanning more than 40 years, Sondre Bratland has enriched us with a voice that becomes nobler with each passing year, like the finest vintage wine. Most of his repertoire is documented on the 15 solo albums he has released on the KKV label.

Now he has collected his most popular tracks on a monumental double CD called “Gje meg handa di” [Give me your hand], named after the song people come to hear him sing from far and wide. This release has one CD with folk songs and one with hymns. For the listeners, these are presented in chronological order from 1976 to the present.

Sondre Bratland is an icon in the Norwegian folk song community. He is the singer who, without a doubt, has performed in the highest amount of churches in Norway, but has also performed in jazz clubs, cultural centres, festivals, theatres, pubs and cabaret stages across Norway. He has brought religious folk songs into the most seasoned and beer-stained venues, and brought folk songs from the most remote mountain settlements and the most isolated valleys into our cathedrals. Sondre has been entrusted with hymns and songs which would have been lost to posterity if he had not brought them to us, and he has given new interpretations to familiar hymns so that we could rediscover their strength and beauty.

Two musicians perform on most of Sondre’s solo albums: Iver Kleive (organ and piano) and Knut Reiersrud (guitars). We also hear interesting musical profiles, such as Einar Mjølsnes, Annbjørg Lien and Nils Økland (Hardanger fiddle and fiddle), Steinar Ofsdal and Per Egil Hovland (flutes), Roar Engelberg (pan pipes), Paolo Vinaccia (percussion) and Sigbjørn Apeland (harmonium), to mention just a few of the many musicians who have contributed on Sondre Bratland’s releases.
