Bortenfor [Beyond] – New album featuring Emilie Lidsheim
What happens beyond and on the other side of life? Can we think more outside the box and live in our circles? If a relationship goes south, can we set it aside? What, really, are weeds? These are questions Emilie Lidsheim asks on her new album “Bortenfor” (Beyond), to be released on the KKV label on 25 August.
Lidsheim plays with various expressions, ranging from the up close, painful, naked and acoustic to synthpop and funky organ rhythms. While viola, keyboards, drums and bass form the basic sound of the album, the sound landscape is seasoned with bassoon, cembalo and organ. Regardless style and musical expression, the lyrics are always in focus: the narrative on life and death, the big and the small love, nature and about us.
“Bortenfor” deals with the close relationships, the good ones you know will last a lifetime and the more ephemeral ones. The bad relationships that do not go away, but which you would like to be able to set aside. In her songs Lidsheim wonders about what happens after this life. She sings about waiting for sorrow, an anticipatory grief, and how calm and turbulent it can be. The album deals with the wish to sing and dance yourself weightlessly away in the falling dusk, to trust that things will always go up after they have gone done. She sings about ticking all of society’s boxes and fitting into its norms, and that we need more space and broader boundaries to find room for everything that we are. Just like on her debut album, “Gap”, she reveals a love and understanding of nature. On this occasion she has chosen a type of life that has an undeserved bad reputation, but which also has significance and value: weeds.
“Bortenfor”, recorded last winter, will be released on 25 August. It was recorded at Ugla Lyd and produced by Morten Qvenild. The musicians on the album, in addition to Lidsheim on vocals, violin and viola, are Morten Qvenild on keyboards, Stian Andersen on double bass and Ivar Myrset Asheim on drums.
